đ„ MORE bad writing advice (q&a)
more awful answers AND a tip from an expert
Pssstâread to the end for something special coming in Fridayâs email!
Thereâs no shortage of bad advice on the Internet.
Hereâs some more that my readers have received:
Super strictly following show donât tell initially tripped me up on my current MS. My editor couldnât connect to my character!! Which is like the opposite effect of what the advice is supposed to produce đ
I love how this comment shows us the practical effects of misguided writing advice. Strict adherence to a âprincipleâ can lead us into murky waters, as we discussed in an earlier post. Imagine having a friend who always tried to show their emotions and desires instead of telling you what they needed every so often. Murky, indeedâand that makes it hard to form a connection. Same goes for characters.
Quick breakâcheck out Cathrynâs new sci-fi Kickstarter!

That cover!
Okay, back to business:
. . . the one that seems to get me stuck the most is the times I've been told that I should write to Market because it's the only way I'll sell books or get an agent
Look, ma, another false dichotomy!
I canât say it any better than John Truby, author of my beloved craft book The Anatomy of Story:
One of the biggest mistakes writers make is to fall into the trap of either-or thinking: either I write what I care about, or I write what will sell. This is a false distinction . . . Your writing should mean a lot to you personally. But writing for an audience makes it a lot easier to do what you love.
Lots to unpack there. One thing I take away from this: if you donât believe in what youâre writing, why would an agent? Write what you love and make it irresistible for the right audience .
Donât take advice at face value. Consider it, play out the implications, and enjoy the process. You get to create stuffâisnât that amazing?
Remember that something special I mentioned up top? Itâs a brand-new resource for authors in revisions, and itâs coming Friday. If youâve found any value in Avocado Bites so far, forward this email to your writer friends so they can subscribe!
