🥑 debate of the week #1

sentence fragments!

Controversial. Debatable. Not worth writing a newsletter about.

These are just some of the sentence fragments I thought of when sitting down to write this email.

Sentence fragments are clearly, definitively, and currently against the rules of writing. By definition, they break subject-verb conventions.

But authors still use them all. The. Time.

So I’m gathering your responses to this question:

Should fiction authors use sentence fragments in their prose?

For imaginary bonus points, I’d love to hear your thoughts on:

  • when authors should use fragments,

  • how often they should use them,

  • and why they should use them (or not)!

Whether you’re an author or a reader, whatever genres you prefer, I’d love to hear your answer—and I may feature it in the follow-up series.

Respond to this email with your thoughts!

P.S.: I still have a couple of editing slots open for the fall. Subscribers get first dibs.
